History, Community & did we mention the views?

The Rockcliffe Apartments near downtown Montclair are as unique and welcoming as their inhabitants. No cookie cutter units here — high ceilings and original moldings provide a canvas for your personal vision.

Sugarman & Berger, designers of the New Yorker Hotel, built the Rockcliffe in 1940 and took full advantage of the amazing light that comes from our elevation of 800 feet and our location on the First Mountain.

And did we mention the views? Lower floors look out onto parklike surroundings and upper floors have views of the NYC skyline or the hills to the west.

What residents are saying

We moved into the Rockcliffe four years ago, and we feel quite lucky to have found this building, perched since 1940 on the ridge of First Mountain in the Watchung range. It is really beautiful here with a large back lawn for strolling or gatherings, a lush front welcoming lawn, and a cocktail hour by the back fountain to which all are welcome, including the deer! We love the sound of songbirds, and watching the magnificent hawks soar past our windows. In practical terms, we appreciate the services included in the maintenance, which is quite reasonable. No shoveling, no more calling repair people, a terrific and friendly on-site building maintenance crew, 24-hour desk service and security. No more having to be home for special deliveries or pick-ups. In lifestyle terms, we have met so many warm, welcoming and interesting people, who are open to everyone and are respectful of each other’s privacy. We love the Rockcliffe’s ambiance and the creative life of Montclair, but we also love New York City. When we go into the City for business and entertainment, it could not be easier, whether by car, train or even taking a bus, just a block down the hill. Last but not least, every room in our apartment looks out onto the NYC skyline, while many of our friends enjoy sunsets over the valley that seem surreal in their beauty at particular times of year. We wanted to transition from many years in our beloved San Francisco and Santa Monica, and the Rockcliffe in Montclair has exceeded our expectations.

Lovely setting, beautiful pre-war apartments with lots of light. Amazing views all around. It's been five years and we're very happy here.

I've been a resident here for 18 years and I would love to have an additional 18. The security, quiet and park-like setting is wonderful.

I sold a house in Montclair and thought I’d rent one of Montclair’s brand new apartments but when I went to take a look, I found the space to be very limited and couldn’t see myself living like this for any length of time. I had owned a home and wanted a space that felt like a home. I found a beautiful unit at the Rockcliffe (one of the area's few coops) with fantastic views and lots of space. The first morning I woke up here I literally cried with joy when I saw the light streaming through my bedroom window. Residents are friendly and helpful — this is a gem.
